Robotics Competition

Project Overview

Objective: Build a robot to score points in a tournament style competition against other students
Role: Individual competition: designed, manufactured, and programmed all aspects of robot
Skills: Rapid prototyping, CAD modeling, Machining, Programming (Arduino), Electronics/Circuits, Design Notebook
Result: Successfully built a robot from scratch to compete in end of semester competition against other students

Project Description

In the mechanical engineer course, intro to design for manufacturing, students spend their semester building robots to compete in a tournament against one another. Every student is given the same set of starting materials (servo motors, base stock, microcontrollers, etc.) The objective is to score more points than your opponent on a course that changes every year. My year the theme was a carnival amusement park where points could be scored four different ways:

1). Press a button to dispense a ticket and successfully retrieve the ticket (points per ticket retrieved)
2). Inflate a balloon (points for how much you inflate the balloon)
3). Launch a weight into the air on a high striker guide rail (points for how far you move the weight up closer to the bell/ringing the bell)
4). Rotate a Ferris wheel (multiplier based on how many rotations it makes)
